Wingate sits a little inland from the coast, and that changes the roofing picture compared with somewhere like Seaham or Blackhall. The village grew up around its colliery, closed decades ago now, and much of the housing stock reflects that: rows of brick terraces on streets like Station Road, along with the neighbouring former colliery village of Station Town just to the north. These terraces tend to have shared roof structures and original slate that's now well past its expected working life, so I see a lot of nail sickness and cracked slates when I'm surveying roofs here.

Being inland doesn't mean Wingate escapes weather problems, though. It still catches the wind coming off the Durham Heritage Coast, and being slightly elevated means exposed gable ends can take a real battering during winter storms. I've repointed plenty of gable walls here where the mortar has simply worn away from decades of wind-driven rain, letting damp track through into bedroom walls.

From my base at 160 West View Road in Hartlepool, reaching Wingate usually means a run along the A19 and then across on the B1283 or through Station Town, depending on where the job is. It's not a long trip, and I keep an eye on jobs in this part of County Durham, including nearby Sedgefield and Wheatley Hill, so I'm often already in the area.

Beyond the terraces, there's a scattering of more rural property around Wingate too, including some older farmhouses and outbuildings on the edges of the village. These often have larger, more exposed roof spans and need a different approach to fixings and bracing compared with a compact terraced roof. I assess each one on its structure rather than assuming a village job is automatically a small one.

Wingate lies inland, a short drive west of Peterlee and north-west of Hartlepool, reached easily via the A19 and the A181. Like Station Town and Wheatley Hill nearby, it grew around coal mining, and many of its streets are made up of brick terraces with slate or replacement concrete tile roofs, shared chimney stacks and rear offshoots. Newer estates on the edge of the village add modern tiled roofs with fascias and soffits that are now reaching their first round of maintenance.

Being on higher, more open ground, Wingate roofs take plenty of wind, and it is usually the ridges, verges and chimney stacks that suffer first.
